How To Keep Animals Out Of Your Garden

The summer season is upon us, which means you'll be spending more time outdoors and in your garden, planting tomatoes, peppers, squash, delicious herbs, and other kinds of vegetables. Pretty soon you'll have a feast fit for a king! Unless, of course, some hungry critters get to it first.

What kind of animals might invade your garden?

Don't give up on your garden. Your plants may have been destroyed last summer, but that doesn't have to happen again. There is hope! Here are some strategic ideas to kick-start your garden protection regime:

  • Build a barrier. Try planting flowers with prickly foliage on the perimeter to keep out your furry friends. If you don't mind the sight of a fence in your garden, get a wire mesh fence with holes no bigger than one square inch. Make sure it's at least 18 inches high or the bunnies will find a way in!
  • Plant some lavender. Lavandula angustifolia contains an essential oil that veggie-eating insects, deer, and other animals simply detest! Plant a circle of lavender around your herbs and veggies to ward off unwanted visitors and protect your crops.
  • Expand your herb garden. Basil, garlic, rosemary, sage, catnip, thyme... you can design your garden in a way that will repel the creatures who have been all too eager to take a bite out of your new squash plant. Learn how to plant a more strategic garden and send those critters packing!
  • Raise those beds. To ensure the safety of your precious harvest, raise the sides of your beds at least 18 inches high. You can even lay down mesh wiring before filling the beds with soil to keep the gophers and moles from spoiling your dinner.
